How to cancel your expat health insurance in France

Learn how to cancel your expat health insurance policy in France, what happens to your coverage after canceling, and how to switch to a mutuelle after joining the sécurité sociale.

Written by Eloi Lanthiez

You can cancel your expat health insurance at any time through your Feather account, as long as you cancel before the 1st of the following month. Once canceled, your policy stays active until the end of the current month and does not renew. If you're continuing to live in France, you're legally required to have health insurance in place before canceling. If you've recently joined the sécurité sociale and registered with the CPAM, you should consider signing up for a mutuelle as a top-up to get the most comprehensive coverage available in France.

We can help you determine what your options are and assist you in upgrading your expat insurance to public and private insurance.

How to cancel

You can cancel your Expat insurance at anytime, but keep in mind that you'll need to cancel before the 1st of the following month to avoid being billed and covered for that additional month. In addition, a one-month minimum applies for all policies.

You can cancel your Expat policy easily by:

  • Logging in to your Feather account (simply enter your email address that you used to sign up for your expat policy and then you will be sent a one time password, which you can use to log in);

  • Selecting your expat policy in your account; and

  • Clicking on the cancel button.

What is the deadline to cancel and avoid being charged for the next month?

To avoid being charged for the following month, you must cancel before the 1st of that month. If you cancel on or after the 1st, your policy has already renewed and you will be billed and covered for that full month. Coverage ends at the end of the month in which you cancel.

What happens to my coverage if I'm leaving France partway through the month?

If you're planning to leave France part way through a month, keep in mind that our policies run on full calendar months, and there is no option to end coverage early mid-month. If you leave on, say, the 15th of the month, your policy will have already renewed on the 1st and you'll be charged for that full month.

The upside is that you're not locked into a long-term yearly contract, since you can cancel on a monthly basis with no penalties. Just keep in mind that you need to have a health insurance at all times while residing in France.

What are my health insurance options if I'm staying in France?

If you're continuing to live in France after canceling your expat health insurance, you are legally required to have health coverage in place before canceling your existing policy.

If you're canceling your expat health insurance because you've registered with the CPAM and received your French social security number, we recommend signing up for our mutuelle to top up your public coverage.

Sécurité Sociale only reimburses a portion of your medical costs (70% of general healthcare costs, and 80% of hospitalization costs). A mutuelle covers the rest, including preventative care and routine check-ups that expat policies typically don't include.

We offer 4 coverage levels so you can choose the plan that fits your needs and budget. You can get a quote and compare the options here.
