How to cancel your expat health insurance in France

Learn how to cancel your expat health insurance policy, what legal requirements apply if you're staying in France, and how to switch to a mutuelle after joining the sécurité sociale.

Written by Eloi Lanthiez

You can cancel your expat health insurance at any time through your Feather account. If you're continuing to live in France, you're legally required to have health insurance in place before canceling , either through the public system (CPAM) or another private plan. If you've recently joined the sécurité sociale and registered with the CPAM, you should consider signing up for a mutuelle as a top-up to get the most comprehensive coverage available in France.

We can help you determine what your options are and assist you in upgrading your expat insurance to public and private insurance.

How to cancel

You can cancel your Expat insurance at anytime, but keep in mind that if your policy start date falls on the 1st of the month, you'll need to cancel before the 1st of the following month to avoid being billed and covered for an additional month.

You can cancel your Expat policy easily by:

  • Logging in to your Feather account at https://app.feather-insurance.com/ (simply enter your email address that you used to sign up for your expat policy and then you will be sent a one time password, which you can use to log in);

  • Selecting your expat policy in your account; and

  • Clicking on the cancel button.

If you have joined the CPAM, you can then sign up for our mutuelle for the most comprehensive coverage!

What are my health insurance options if I'm staying in France?

If you're canceling your expat health insurance because you've registered with the CPAM and received your French social security number, we recommend signing up for our mutuelle to top up your public coverage.

Sécurité Sociale only reimburses a portion of your medical costs (70% of general healthcare costs, and 80% of hospitalization costs). A mutuelle covers the rest, including preventative care and routine check-ups that expat policies typically don't include.

We offer 4 coverage levels so you can choose the plan that fits your needs and budget. You can get a quote and compare the options here.
