Managing dependents on your expat health insurance plan

Learn how to add or remove dependents from your expat health insurance plan, and how to transfer a dependent's policy to a separate Feather account.

Written by Eloi Lanthiez

You can add dependents to your expat health insurance plan and manage all policies from a single Feather account. Each dependent requires their own policy number, but you choose the plan type for each person independently. You can cancel a dependent's policy at any time after the 1-month minimum, or request a transfer to a separate account through our support team.

Can I add dependents to my expat health insurance plan?

Yes, you can add dependents to your expat health insurance plan. Each dependent gets their own policy number, but all dependent policies can be managed together from a single Feather account. You can manage each person's plan independently, you're not required to have the same start and end dates for everyone.

How do I add a dependent to my expat health insurance plan?

To add a dependent, follow these steps:

  1. Sign up for expat health insurance for yourself first (or for the person who will be the main policyholder).

  2. Once your own policy is active, log into your Feather account and open your policy.

  3. Select "Add dependents" and complete the sign-up for your dependent.

Once the process is complete, you'll automatically receive each person's insurance documents under the Documents section of each policy. You can use those documents as proof of coverage and for any Visa appointment.

How do I remove a dependent from my expat health insurance plan?

You can cancel a dependent's policy at any time after the 1-month minimum coverage period. Canceling one policy does not affect any other policies on your account, since each policy runs in parallel.

For instructions on how to cancel, see our article on how to cancel your expat health insurance.

Can a dependent move their policy to their own Feather account?

Yes, a dependent's policy can be transferred to a separate Feather account. Each policy can only be linked to one account at a time, but the transfer is possible through our support team. To start the process, the dependent will need to contact us and confirm how payments should be handled:

  • The original account holder continues paying for the dependent's policy, or

  • Payment details are updated so the dependent pays for their own policy.

Both options are available. Please reach out to us here for assistance if you need to move your dependent's policy to their own account.
